Diagnostic interview
Chelsea Chesen grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of a psychiatrist and a teacher. She attended public school then went to Duke University in North Carolina for her undergraduate education, graduating with honors and a degree in Physical Anthropology, Primatology, and Gender Studies. She returned to Nebraska for medical school and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, second in her class.
She completed her first half of psychiatry residency in the University of NE-Creighton University joint program and her last half of residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She served as Chief Resident and once finished with her training, joined the faculty at Arizona full-time. Her academic portfolio was that of a clinician-teacher, with a focus on treatment-resistant outpatient care, women’s mental health, and telepsychiatry. She became Board-Certified in general psychiatry in 2002.
Eventually, Dr. Chesen moved back to Omaha, Nebraska, and served on her medical school’s faculty for a few years before starting her current solo private practice in 2009. She loves being an independent physician because it facilitates the quality of care she feels is needed without corporate or managing entity interference. It also allows her to be politically active and involved in organized medicine. In 2016, the Nebraska Medical Association recognized her as their “Physician of the Year” in part due to her strong focus on physician well-being and mental health. Suicide prevention and caring for physicians as patients is a passion for Dr. Chesen. She is also passionate about gender-affirming care and patient autonomy.
Outside of her clinical and political interests, Dr. Chesen enjoys spending time with her husband, gardening, knitting, reading and tending to her “poodle pack.” Her dogs are a great source of inspiration for her. She wants to write the “great American novel” before she dies. She dreams about doing stand-up comedy. You may find her on social media on Facebook and Instagram, where her handle is @shrinkinthebox.
Dr. Chesen is considered in-network for most people with the following insurance plans. Note that ultimately this is not a guarantee of coverage, but we are happy to submit claims for services rendered.
She is not a Medicare provider, so patients with Medicare who wish to be seen are considered to be “self-pay.” She is not a Medicaid provider so she is UNABLE to see patients with Medicaid benefits. We do not take Tri-Care.
Dr. Chesen’s fee schedule is largely determined by the insurance industry who set fees based on standardized schedules. The specifics are included in the new patient paperwork.
